Further reading: adding papers, articles and recordings to a Folio

Put an op-ed, a paper, an article or a talk on a Folio below your stories, and what readers see.

Some of your work doesn't belong to any one story: an op-ed, a research paper, an article you were quoted in, a recorded talk. Further reading puts these on a Folio, below your stories, for the person you're sending it to. For example, if a role asks for your views on AI at work, you can add the op-ed you wrote about it to that Folio.

The four kinds

  • PDF: pick one from Files, or upload one from the Folio. Readers open it in the viewer on the page.
  • Written piece: pick one from Files, or write or paste a new one from the Folio, which saves it to Files too. Readers open it as its own page inside the Folio, in your Folio's look.
  • Link: a title, the publication's name if you want it shown, and the address of something published elsewhere. Readers open it on that site, in a new tab.
  • Video or audio: pick a YouTube, Vimeo, Loom, Spotify or SoundCloud link from Files, or add a new one. Readers play it in the viewer, in that service's own player. Nothing plays until they press play.

Adding Further reading

  1. Open the Folio and go to Further reading.
  2. Choose Add, then the kind you want.
  3. Give it a Title. For a PDF or a video or audio link, it starts as the title the file has in Files. A written piece always uses its own title from Files; change it there.
  4. If you like, add a one-line note on why it's there, up to 160 characters. Readers see it under the title.

Drag pieces to change their order, or use Move up and Move down. Readers see them in your order.

One written piece, many Folios

Written pieces are kept in Files, like PDFs, so you write a piece once and add it to as many Folios as you like. To add one you already have, choose Add and pick it from Files, in the same place you pick a PDF.

  • The title belongs to the piece, so it's the same on every Folio. The note is per Folio, so you can say why it's there differently for each reader. On a Folio, Edit changes only the note, with a link to edit the piece itself in Files.
  • Editing the piece in Files updates every Folio's draft. A live Folio keeps showing what readers already have until you choose Publish changes on it, and Tailored points out each live Folio that's now behind.

See Written pieces in Files for writing, editing and deleting them.

Nothing is rewritten

Further reading is shown exactly as you provide it. Tailored doesn't format, summarize or rewrite it, and the AI doesn't touch it.

Where readers see it

  • Welcome page: below your stories, as tiles with an icon for the kind, the title and your note.
  • Story pages: in the navigation, as its own group below the stories.
  • In the viewer: PDFs and video or audio step through each other with the arrows, in your order. Written pieces and links open on their own.
  • Printed: the welcome page lists the titles, and a written piece prints like a story.

PDFs are checked first

A PDF you upload from the Folio is checked like any other file. It's attached right away, but only you see it until it's approved, and it's left out if you publish before then. If it isn't accepted, it comes off the Folio and the publish box tells you which one.

Readers see changes after you publish

Further reading is part of the Folio, so readers see what you add or change once you choose Publish changes. The exception is deleting something from Files, which takes it off live Folios straight away. Written pieces, titles and notes are checked when you publish, the same as the rest of the Folio's text.

Free and Pro

On Free, each Folio can have 2 pieces of Further reading. Pro has no limit.

If you move from Pro to Free with more than 2 on a Folio, nothing is taken down: readers keep seeing what you published. You can't add more, or publish changes to that Folio, until it has 2 or fewer.

Duplicating a Folio

When you duplicate a Folio, its Further reading comes with it: the same PDFs, video or audio links and written pieces from Files, and copies of its links. Because the copy shares the written pieces rather than copying them, editing a piece later reaches the original and the copy alike, once you publish each one.

Activity

When a reader opens a piece of Further reading, it counts as an open and shows in the Folio's activity with your other file opens. Tailored doesn't track how long anyone reads, watches or listens.

Removing and deleting

  • Removing a piece from a Folio doesn't delete anything from Files.
  • Deleting a PDF, a video or audio link or a written piece in Files takes it off every Folio that uses it straight away, live ones included, without you publishing again. Before you delete, Tailored lists those Folios. A reader who tries to open it sees that it's no longer available.
